The Lincs autotest site is at an old airfield at East Kirkby which on a fine day is a delightful venue with good clean concreted areas. Thankfully Sunday the 12th was such a good day. Before commencing the driving tests there is a joint marshals & competitors briefing to explain to everyone the roles and responsibilities of the marshals, the penalties for competitors should a cone be struck or a line not crossed correctly and the format of the tests.
There were four tests – each test is completed three times with the worst score being deleted and the timing being done through a digital app which self populates a scored spreadsheet. This was a necessary introduction to comply with the MotorsportUK covid-19 guidance but has been welcomed by everyone as it saves transposing the data manually and is an instant record of a competitor’s score.
The tests were similar to those undertaken at the recent California Cup event at Malvern. Ian Webb was extremely competitive from the outset in his bright blue MG Midget but he unfortunately lost drive through a gearbox problem. It is very rare for any competitor to have to retire through mechanical failure as autotesting is regarded as “non-damaging motorsport”. That prompted Malcom Clark in his orange Midget to take the lead and he went on to claim Fastest time of the Day. Danny Reid in a blue MGBGT was very entertaining as was Robert Taylor in his blue MG TF and Michael Denton in his Audi. That latter car just proves you don’t need to be in an MG to compete at autotesting. It’s great fun and any MGCC member is welcome to have a go.
Marshals are always welcome too as there is an opportunity to be a timekeeper, course marshal, club steward or even be the event organiser. Without marshals, the event could not run so it is always a good point to thank them for giving up their time.
